FAQs

  • Functional medicine is a systems-based, root-cause approach to healthcare. Rather than focusing on symptom management or disease labels, it seeks to understand WHY illness develops by exploring the underlying imbalances in body systems (i.e. metabolic, hormonal, gastrointestinal, immune, neurological, and environmental).

We ask “what caused this pattern of dysfunction, and how can we restore optimal function?” In practice, this involves a comprehensive health history and timeline, advanced or specialty lab testing, a detailed review of modifiable risk factors, and personalized plan addressing root causes through nutrition and targeted supplementation, stress and lifestyle modification, gut and detoxification support, and conventional therapy when appropriate.

  • Conventional medicine (or western medicine) focuses on disease diagnosis and symptom management, often without identifying root-causes of illness. Conventional medicine is REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE. Treatment approaches rely heavily on prescribing pharmaceuticals and often lack addressing the importance of lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental factors.

  • No. While they share similarities, holistic medicine is a broad term for treating the “whole person,” while functional medicine is a specific, systems-based approach focused on identifying the root-causes of illness through a patient centered model.

Holistic medicine often utilizes homeopathic medications for treatment and often shies away from conventional medicine approaches.

  • We dive deep into your health by obtaining an extensive history focused on your diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other lifestyle factors. We want to identify any signs or symptoms of dysfunction. Based on this subjective and objective data, we will order routine lab tests and often order specialty tests, which provide us with a picture of your overall health. Based on your history and test results, you will receive a personalized health plan that may include dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, supplementation, and/or prescriptions.
